MT. VERNON — After being held scoreless to start the season, the Lady Rams soccer team piled up the goals Tuesday against Herrin.
Mt. Vernon opened the year with three shutout losses, but racked up a 7-0 win against the first-year Herrin squad.
“It's the first year for them, sort of a club team for them,” Mt. Vernon coach Jim Duncan said. “So we were hoping this would be a good practice game for us, and it was. We took some good things away from the game.”
Madalina Overstreet led the offensive attack for Mt. Vernon with a hat trick. She added an assist.
“She's been doing a good job crashing the goal, and it fell her way today,” Duncan said. “So she's coming along real nice.”
Makenna Ezell gave the Lady Rams a 1-0 edge four minutes into the game with a goal. Ezell also assisted on three scores.
Alex Pigg and Sarah Atkinson ended the first half with goals to give the Lady Rams a 4-0 edge at the break.
Kirsten McGowen opened the scoring in the second half with a goal 12 minutes into action. Overstreet added two goals late for Mt. Vernon to complete her hat trick.
Mt. Vernon finished the game with 30 shots.
“It's an upbeat game, but it's also a game where they did a lot of things right,” Duncan said. “Obviously we kept it on our half, which was good, but the thing I liked the most was that we stayed organized when we were on the attack,” Duncan said.
Mt. Vernon is 1-3 this season and travels to Belleville Althoff on Monday.
