MT. VERNON — The Rams tennis team returns a pair of state finalists at the top of its lineup.

Both Aaron Neibert, a senior, and junior Nathan Arnold are back. A season ago the two traveled to the Chicago area and formed a doubles duo for Mt. Vernon. Neibert and Arnold replace the graduated Noah Greenwalt and Brent Flota in the team’s top singles spots.

“That’s a big jump if you’re a three or four player to go to one or two,” Mt. Vernon coach Dave Junkins said. “Because most everybody you play has a good one player and a pretty good two player.”

Neibert is one of four seniors in the top six for the Rams this season. Aaron Burge, Brandon Nabors and Cody Wilson are all back along with sophomore Jared Hatton.

“Really I think our biggest advantage this year will be our depth,” Junkins said. “One through six, they’re all pretty solid.

“It will probably be the strongest one through six lineup since I’ve been coaching here.”

The tennis team like other spring sports have struggled with the cold, windy weather start to the season. Junkins said his team has missed about a day a week due to poor weather.

“The weather has been miserable,” Junkins said.

Mt. Vernon was scheduled to start the season with a home match today against Massac County. After a lengthy layoff, the Rams play again Saturday, April 6 at the Triad Tournament. The tournament starts a series of five straight road matches before the Rams return home to face Fairfield in mid April.
