Carbondale tops Lady Rams

Carbondale's girls soccer team used a dominating offensive performance to beat the Lady Rams 7-0 Saturday.

All of Carbondale's goals came in the opening half. The seven unanswered goals prompted a shortened second half.

As far as them doing what they're supposed to be doing as far as the coach's perspective they're doing that,” Mt. Vernon coach Jim Duncan said. “We just can't compete against a talented team like this yet.

The girls are giving us their best.”

Mt. Vernon's best offensive chance of the game came near the 20-minute second half. Kirsten McGowen orchestrated a breakaway, but her shot was stopped by the Carbondale keeper.

The Lady Rams were without several players due to spring break and injury.

We've got three or four gone on spring break,” Duncan said. “We've got two out for the year with injury. We had one quit because of asthma. So we're down on numbers, only two subs.”

Kaitlyn Grubbs had a pair of goals to lead Carbondale. The Lady Terriers scored twice in the opening 10 minutes of action on a chilly, windy day at Steve Harrison field in Lincoln Park.

The thing that we talked about was we have to learn from this game, just keep it out of the middle, bring it to the side,” Duncan said.

Mt. Vernon struggled to maintain possession throughout the game and spent the majority of the game defending directly in front of its goal.

Amelia Quinn finished the game with a dozen saves for the Lady Rams. Just one came in the second half of action.

She's a sophomore. She made some brilliant saves,” Duncan said. “That's one of the pluses we're taking away from the game. We've talked about Amelia just being a natural talent with hands and with the foot.”

Mt. Vernon is 0-3 this season and hosts Herrin today.
