Season ends for Webber

GOREVILLE – Webber and Shawnee battled and scraped their way through a low-scoring baseball sectional semifinal Thursday.

“I told our team we’d have two to three chances,” Webber coach Sam Root said. “We had the bases loaded nobody out chance. We only got one run. We had a chance there at the end.”With the game tied, Shawnee pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to grab a 3-1 edge over the Trojans. Webber stepped up in the seventh and had runners at first and third with two outs, threatening the Redskins. The game ended without Webber putting the ball into play. Koaltin Dye tried to steal second with Gage Raudenbush at the plate. Dye was called out on a close play at the bag, ending Webber’s season.Shawnee will play for Saturday’s sectional championship against Gallatin County. Both pitchers dominated the early innings. Ty Henderson hurled a complete game for the Trojans. The senior finished with five strikeouts.Webber’s only hit off Shawnee starter Austin Pennington came in the sixth inning when Levi Aydt knocked a single. The Webber shortstop also reached on an error and a walk.“We never squared up a ball all day,” Root said. “Honestly, we have a good lineup, and that’s a tip of your cap to the Pennington boy. He’s been doing that all year.”Despite getting just one hit, Webber was able to create offensive chances. The Trojans best opportunity came in the third. Webber loaded the bases with no outs. Logan Ganieany and Koaltin Dye opened the inning with back-to-back walks. Raudenbush loaded the bases when he reached on an error.Shawnee recorded the first out on a force at home. A strikeout followed before Aydt coaxed a bases loaded walk. The score evened the game at 1-1.“We have to hit the ball a little bit better than we did today, if you want a chance to win no matter what,” Root said. “But we knew we were going to get into a pitcher’s duel and that’s what it was.”Shawnee took the lead in the sixth when Gavyn Ellet lofted a deep sacrifice fly to left field that scored Aiden McMahan. It was his second RBI of the game. Pennington added an RBI single to push the lead to 3-1.Webber finished the season 24-10 overall. The Trojans broke the record for wins in a season and won the first baseball regional title in school history.
