Mt. Vernon to host sports camps

Mt. Vernon will host a variety of sports camps in June.

Rams basketball camp will be June 3-6 and cost $40. The camp is for boys entering second through ninth grades. Second through sixth grades will practice 9-11:30 a.m. Seventh through ninth grades will participate noon to 2:30 p.m.

The Mt. Vernon volleyball camp will be June 17-20 and costs $30. The camp is for individuals entering fifth through ninth grades. Monday-Wednesday players will meet 9-11 a.m. and 9-11:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Mt. Vernon’s baseball camp will be June 17-20. The camp is open to grades second through ninth. The cost for second and third grades is $30. The cost for fourth through ninth is $40. Individuals with question can contact Tim Holloway at 315-4626.

The Rams soccer camp will be June 24-27. The cost for ages 2-3 is $35. The cost for ages 4-5 is $45 and ages 6 and over is $85. Individuals can register online at www.eliteft.com.

Mt. Vernon will host a girls basketball camp in June. The camp is June 10-13 and costs $40 per camper. It is open to girls entering second through ninth grades. Individuals can pick up registration forms at the athletic office or register at the door.

Jimmie Johnson to visit twister-hit town

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Five-Time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson will visit tornado-ravaged Moore, Okla., on Thursday to help distribute supplies to victims of the May 19-20 tornados.

Johnson will be accompanied by his wife, Chani, a native of Muskogee. The visit is in conjunction with Johnson’s sponsor, Lowe’s, and the Feed the Children initiative.

Johnson said Monday he hopes University of Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops and other Sooners join him.

Johnson also says he’ll donate his winnings from Sunday’s race at Dover to tornado recovery efforts.

The Jimmie Johnson Foundation each year also donates to school projects in Oklahoma, along with California and Charlotte, where he currently lives.

  • Rams spend time at SIU football camp

    The Rams football team spent a little time away from their traditional summer practice setting at the end of last week.

    On Thursday close to three dozen sophomores, juniors and seniors traveled to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale for a football team camp. The camp, which included three other high schools, wrapped up Saturday.

    Root, who guided the Trojans to the 1A state finals in Peoria this spring, was named the Southern Illinois Baseball Coaches Association 1A Coach of the Year.
