Orphans take down Rams


CENTRALIA — The Orphans used a dominating run to down Mt. Vernon 49-36 Friday night.

Centralia jumped to an early lead after Mt. Vernon missed several layups and shots near the basket in the opening quarter. Mt. Vernon’s early misses helped the Orphans race to an 11-3 edge.

“Obviously we got off to a really bad start, but I thought we kind of settled in a little bit,” Mt. Vernon coach Scott Gamber said.

Despite the slow start, Mt. Vernon climbed back into the game in the second quarter. Braden Fitzjerrells and Trevor Flota knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to slash the deficit to 16-11. Flota led the Rams with eight points. The Rams crept to within three points at 18-15 after a Michael Feezer layup.

“Here we are, we’re down three, we have a chance to go into the half with a very winnable situation,” Gamber said.

Centralia responded by closing the first half with a run to push its lead to double figures. The Orphans outscored Mt. Vernon 9-0 during the stretch and took a 27-15 edge into halftime.

“The wheels just completely fell off there,” Gamber said. “I thought we panicked a little bit when we got down. I thought we really shot the ball quickly in the offense. We settled for a lot of low percentage shots. We didn’t make them.”
