MT. VERNON —
Chase Vosburgh enters regional action as a top seed in his weight class for the Rams wrestling team today at Carbondale.
Five Mt. Vernon wrestlers were awarded No. 2 seeds. They were: Kalen Roberts (106 pounds), Quentin Favors (120), Alex Vosburgh (160), Tristan Penrod (195) and Justin Armstrong (285). Chase Vosburgh wrestles in the 145-pound class.
“It’s just one of those goals I always have to get as many kids out as we can, getting those top seeds is always a good indication of what you can accomplish,” Mt. Vernon coach Sean Docherty said. “Again some of those kids they had tough matches with these kids before. Some of them were close. It could go either way.”
The Rams will wrestle against every South Seven Conference team except Althoff. The competition includes conference champion Marion. Other teams are: East St. Louis, Herrin, Mascoutah and Waterloo.
“We picked up some of those metro East teams that we’ve faced throughout the season,” Docherty said. “I think it’s going to be a really good tournament and just a really good test for our kids.”
Preliminary regional rounds start at 10 a.m. with finals at 1 p.m. The top three wrestlers in each weight class advance to the Mattoon sectional.
“I’m really anxious, really excited to see what my guys can do (today) against this real good competition and see where we can stack up at sectionals up at Mattoon,” Docherty said.
