Chase and Alex Vosburgh will represent the Rams wrestling team at the state final after finishing first and second at Saturday’s sectional.
Chase Vosburgh won the 145-pound weight class. Vosburgh beat Mt. Zion’s Dalton Coleman 5-3 in the final. Vosburgh enters the state final with a 38-1 record.
“He just did a great job against that kid, and that kid is the No. 2 ranked kid in the state,” Mt. Vernon coach Sean Docherty said. “That lets Chase have a little bit of confidence I think going into the state meet.”
He faces Sandwich’s Jarrod Johnson in the opening round in Champaign. Johnson is 16-12 this season and placed fourth in his sectional.
Alex Vosburgh faced a familiar foe in Cahokia’s David Frazier in his 160-pound championship. The two also wrestled for the regional title with Frazier pinning Vosburgh in the second period. Frazier won again Saturday. This time the final was 10-5.
“Like I told Alex, I’m like hey you’re closing the gap,” Docherty said. “You’re getting better, and you’re figuring it out.”
Vosburgh opens his state final with a matchup against Pontiac’s Alex Friedman, who is 42-2 this season and finished third at sectional. Vosburgh enters with a 37-3 mark. Two of his three losses this season came against Frazier.
Quentin Favors (120) was eliminated after a pair of defeats to start the sectional. Tristan Penrod (195) and Justin Armstrong (285) both wrestled to within a win of the third-place match but were eliminated.
