Mt. Vernon golfer signs with Rend Lake College

MT. VERNON — Rams golfer Matthew Williams will be staying close to home for his college experience.

Williams announced Monday that he will attend Rend Lake College.

“It was so close, and I could live at home,” Williams said. “I’ve played those courses where they’ve practiced and do all their workouts. It just seemed like a logical place to go.”

The Mt. Vernon senior advanced to the state final this season and finished tied for 17th with a 78 and six shots behind the leader. He had 10 pars over the 18-hole round.

“I didn’t play very well toward the ends of the back nines, both the front and the back on the last three holes I really struggled,” Williams said.

Williams joins Trevor Flota as the second player off last season’s team to commit to a college.

“They were both kids that progressed a great deal from their freshman year to their senior year,” Mt. Vernon golf coach Quinn McClure said. “Both ended up at the state golf tournament. Both tied for 17th.

“From their freshman year until now, the strides that those two made were great.”

Williams didn’t start seriously playing the sport until his freshman year of high school.

“I needed something to do besides baseball in the spring so I just decided to pick it up and really I just liked it,” Williams said. “I love golf.”

He added that he wants to improve his short game and putting.
