Lady Rams romp past Cahokia

Mt. Vernon’s softball team cruised to a 15-1 win over Cahokia on Tuesday.

Hannah Wright was the winning pitcher for Mt. Vernon. She allowed just one hit and fanned 11 batters over five innings.

At the plate, Mt. Vernon pounded out 15 hits.

Page Clinton had three hits for the Lady Rams. Malorie Garner added two hits and two RBI. Colleen Skobel finished with two hits and two RBI.

Hannah Wright added a three-run homer, and Kelby Kujawa had two hits.

Mt. Vernon is 6-7 overall this season and 2-3 in South Seven Conference play.

Woodlawn shuts down Hamilton County

Woodlawn’s baseball team blanked Hamilton County 6-0 Tuesday.

Logan Isaac was the winning pitcher and threw six innings. He had nine strikeouts and allowed two hits.

Jayson Hapeman had a hit and two RBI. Matt Kennedy added two hits and an RBI. Derek Kehrer finished with a hit and an RBI.

Woodlawn has won seven consecutive games to improve to 8-6 overall this season. The Cardinals travel to Okawville today.

Rams tennis upends Benton

Mt. Vernon’s boys tennis team cruised past Benton 8-1 Monday.

Aaron Neibert, Nathan Arnold, Aaron Burge, Jared Hatton, Brandon Nabors and Cody Wilson were all winners in singles.

Wilson and Hatton teamed together for a doubles victory. Burge and Nabors were also doubles winners.

Lady Devils win track meet

The Sesser-Valier/Waltonville girls track team won the freshman/sophomore conference meet. The Lady Devils finished with 53 points.

First-place finishers for the team were: the 800 meter relay team of Peyton Jennings, Savannah Boles, Michelle Ort and Emily VanDeveer; and VanDeveer in the high jump.

Michel records hole-in-one

Chris “Big Ticket” Michel hit a hole-in-one at Green Hills Golf Club in Mt. Vernon.

The shot came on the course’s seventh hole on Sunday. Michel used a gap wedge from 117 yards.

  • Rams spend time at SIU football camp

    The Rams football team spent a little time away from their traditional summer practice setting at the end of last week.

    On Thursday close to three dozen sophomores, juniors and seniors traveled to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale for a football team camp. The camp, which included three other high schools, wrapped up Saturday.

    Webber's baseball team capped the season with several individual honors, and coach Sam Root recently added to the postseason awards list.

    Root, who guided the Trojans to the 1A state finals in Peoria this spring, was named the Southern Illinois Baseball Coaches Association 1A Coach of the Year.
