Rams roll past Centralia

Jones, Donoho tally hat tricks

By Paul Hines

The Rams soccer offense buried Centralia 8-0 Thursday.

I really liked that,” Mt. Vernon coach Jim Duncan said of his team's offensive approach.

Mac Jones and Adam Donoho both finished the game with hat tricks to lead the Rams on offense. Duncan made a switch with the two players. He pushed Donoho higher up in the attack, which allowed Jones to play in more of an attacking midfield role.

Adam was hungry for it, and Mac I think likes the freedom a little better in the midfield, having the ball at his feet so he can make some moves.”

Mt. Vernon raced to a 4-0 lead just 14 minutes into the game. Jones and Donoho helped to build the big advantage with a pair of goals each to start.

Both earned their hat trick later in the opening half.

Jones finished off his third score with about 10 minutes left in the half. Donoho struck a third time when Dalton McGowen lofted a free kick into the penalty area. Donoho won the ball in the air and headed the ball into the back of the net. The score gave Mt. Vernon a 6-0 edge at halftime.

I told them at halftime I said, 'Let's take this game to the (regional) what we're doing here today,'” Duncan said.

Donoho had a chance for a fourth goal two minutes into the second half. He broke away from the Centralia defense, but he fed a pass across the box to Josh Cortez, who finished with a goal.

The score put the Rams ahead 7-0. Joseph McDanel added another score with three minutes left in the game.

Mt. Vernon's defense was rarely tested throughout the game. The Orphans finished with five shots on goal. Mt. Vernon's J.J. Wiegel ended with two saves.

Mt. Vernon is 9-7-1 this season. The Rams travel to Bresse Mater Dei on Monday.
