Rams aim for state in Decatur

Bushue, Bauer run for Lady Rams

By Paul Hines

A top six finish and a berth in the state finals is the Rams cross country team's goal today when they travel to Decatur for the sectional.

The Rams face a different style of course this week after the rugged terrain of Highland. Decatur's course incorporates a golf course. A week ago, Turner said he and his team took a conservative approach. Today will be the opposite. He wants his runners to get off to a quick start in the opening mile.

It's more of a speed course as compared to a strength course,” Mt. Vernon coach Clint Turner said.

Turner said for most of the Rams, the Decatur course is preferable.

A guy like Brykell, a long-legged kid that can stretch his stride and just concentrate on running fast, it makes just for a different approach mentally for those guys for running,” Turner said. “We've talked about the exact opposite of what we did last week where we were talking about taking it easy in the first mile, we're actually talking this week about we're going to have to get out and run a good, fast first mile. It will be tough to catch up.”

The Rams enter the sectional fresh from a fourth-place finish at the Highland regional. Mt. Vernon finished behind Waterloo, Mascoutah and Triad.

David Modert has led the Rams throughout the season, and Turner added one of the keys will be keeping a tight group of runners close to Modert.

Girls sectional

The Lady Rams will have a pair of participants in the sectional race.

Kate Bushue and Camilla Bauer both tallied top 15 finishes in the Highland regional and advanced as individuals.

Bushue placed 12th overall in a time of 20:50, and teammate Camilla Bauer was 15th in a time of 21:08.

The girls race starts at noon with the boys action begins at 1 p.m.
