Lady Rams fall in doubleheader

MT. VERNON – The Lady Rams struggled in a Friday doubleheader loss to Breese Mater Dei.

Mt. Vernon dropped the opening matchup 10-3 before falling 12-0 in five innings.

“The bottom line is we didn't play well,” Mt. Vernon coach Lance Bodlt said. “And Mater Dei is a very good team, and we obviously didn't have some of our regulars in the lineup today.”

Hannah Wright, one of the team's top pitchers and hitters, missed the game because of illness. Summer Karch started the opener but was removed after five inning because of a quad strain. The leg injury has lingered since early in the season.

“We need her on the mound. We need her at the plate,” Boldt said. “I'm really hoping that she's not hurt.

“We finally got her back, and she threw such a great game against Althoff so I'm hoping there's some good news with that, but she's in pain.”

Mater Dei roared to a 5-0 start after three innings in the opener. Mt. Vernon chipped back into the game in the fourth.

Karch coaxed a walk to open the inning. A curtesy runner came on for Karch and raced all the way around the bases to score on Summer Hobson's wringing double down the left field line. Another run scored on a Rachel Wright groundout. The tallies made the score 5-2.

“The first few innings I thought we played very well,” Boldt said. “I thought we were competitive. We had some misplays in the field, and that's what's hurt us really all year.”

The 5-2 deficit was as close as the Lady Rams would get in the game. Mater Dei responded in the next half inning, taking advantage of three errors. The Lady Knights padded and pushed their lead to 9-2.
