Rams blank Wildcats

MT. VERNON – The Rams baseball team rolled past another opponent Thursday.

This time the team was Marion, and the Rams took a 7-0 South Seven Conference win.“We've been playing solid baseball,” Mt. Vernon coach Tim Holloway said. “(We've had) good pitching, good defense. (We) had some big two-out hits again.”Mt. Vernon used early offense and tacked on four more runs in the final innings to upend the Wildcats.Colten Meador helped the Mt. Vernon offense take a 3-0 lead in the opening inning. The clean-up hitter mashed a triple to the deepest part of Brennan Klein Field. The extra-base hit chased home a pair of Rams runners. Trevor Flota added an RBI double to give Mt. Vernon a 3-0 lead.“You want to hold them, and then jump on them early,” Holloway said. “If you can get that lead and keep putting the pressure on and being aggressive, good things usually happen.”The score stayed the same until late in the game. Tyler Ellis, making his first start since late March, held the Marion bats silent. The Mt. Vernon hurler pitched six innings. He fanned five batters and allowed five hits.“It's good to have Tyler back,” Holloway said. “Tyler threw well, only walked one. When they did get guys on, he made some great pitches and got out of the jam. Tyler looked like his old self today.”Early in the game, Ellis was able to work out of a pair of difficult situations. In the second inning, Ellis induced a ground out to finish the inning. Marion put runners at first and third in the third frame before Ellis fanned Logan Will to end the inning.Mt. Vernon's bats revived, starting in the fifth when the Rams pushed across a run to make the score 4-0.Mt. Vernon put the game out of reach in the sixth with a trio of runs. Hayden Poninski knocked an RBI single. Landon Thomas followed with a two-run single. All three runs came with two outs in the inning.“That's been pretty consistent with this group,” Holloway said. “They've done a good job coming through with two-out RBI this year.”Mt. Vernon is 19-5 overall this season and 5-1 in conference play.
