Rams notch 20th victory
Mt. Vernon’s baseball team hammered Herrin 15-4 in five innings Friday.
The win gave the Rams their 20th of the season.
Landon Thomas had a double, triple and inside-the-park home run to lead the Mt. Vernon offense. He finished with four RBI.
Hayden Poninski, Trevor Flota and Colten Meador had two hits and two RBI each.
Collin Young and Matthew Williams both finished with a hit and RBI each.
Thomas pitched three and two thirds innings to get the win on the mound for the Rams. Tyler Morgan pitched the final inning and a third.
Mt. Vernon is 20-5 this season and travels to Murphysboro on Monday.
Lady Rams roll past Centralia JV
Whitney Warner scored four goals in Mt. Vernon’s 10-0 win over Centralia’s junior varsity squad Friday.
The matchup came in the opening round of the Centralia Tournament.
Sydney Crews added a pair of goals. Taylor McGowen, Haley Johnson, Paisley Stewart and Alex Pigg all added a goal each.
Mt. Vernon is 7-5-1 this season and continues play in the tournament at 11 a.m. today against Harrisburg.
Lady Spartans fall to Wayne City
Wayne City’s softball team beat Waltonville/Sesser-Valier 12-0 Friday.
Wayne City knocked 14 hits in the game. The Lady Spartans finished with four hits and two errors.
Kenseth wins pole at Richmond
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Matt Kenseth didn’t wait long to get his pole award back.
The Joe Gibbs Racing driver stripped of his award at Kansas in a raft of penalties levied by NASCAR, set a track record with a lap at 130.334 mph Friday at Richmond International Raceway.
Kenseth edged JGR teammate Brian Vickers by 0.005 seconds to claim only the 10th top starting position of his career in 481 starts. Vickers, who held the previous qualifying record at 129.983, is filling in for injured JGR driver Denny Hamlin.
