Carbondale overwhelms Lady Rams

The Register-News

---- — MT. VERNON – The Lady Rams softball team fell 12-5 Tuesday against Carbondale.

“Them getting six runs after we come back and make it a game, that’s just so frustrating and deflating,” Mt. Vernon coach Lance Boldt said.

Down 6-2 in the sixth inning, the Lady Rams battled back. Mt. Vernon scored a trio of runs to slash the deficit to a run.

“I am proud of the girls for battling, and we made it a one-run game,” Boldt said. “The 12-5 score was definitely not indicative of what it really was. It was a much closer game than that.”

Page Clinton and Hannah Wright both got on base before three consecutive singles off the bats of Lauren Wilson, Haley Lockhart and Summer Hobson.

Mt. Vernon tried to tie the game by sending pinch runner Makiah Rush home on Hobson’s hit but she was thrown out to end the inning.

“It was close,” Boldt said. “It looked like she might have gotten underneath it, but it’s a close play bang bang at the plate.”

The game marked the sports return of Lockhart who has been injured since the middle of the basketball season. She finished the game with a pair of hits.

“(It was a) big day for Haley Lockhart, just to get her back and get a couple base hits,” Boldt said.

Carbondale answered Mt. Vernon’s rally with one of its own in the top of the seventh. The Lady Terriers scored six times to blow the game open. Mt. Vernon tried three different pitchers during the inning. Kelby Kujawa, Wright and Haley Chelf all saw time inside the circle.

Wright helped the Lady Rams early in the game with a long solo home run. Hobson pushed the second run home on an RBI single.

Mt. Vernon is 6-12 overall this season and 2-5 in South Seven Conference play. The Lady Rams travel to Cahokia today.
