Woodlawn celebrates conference tourney title

WOODLAWN — Carly Ethridge won a pitching duel with Maegan Eskew in Saturday’s Midland Trail Conference tournament title game.

The Woodlawn pitcher threw a complete game shutout against Waltonville/Sesser-Valier. The Lady Cardinals won 2-0. Both pitchers dominated the game, attacking the opposing hitters and allowing their defenses to work behind them.

“I think Maegan did a terrific job,” WSV coach Colene Stanley said. “She hit her spots.

“I’m pretty pleased with her outing.”

The only runs of the game came in the third inning. Sam Williams knocked a two-out triple for Woodlawn that scored Ethridge. Payton Tufts followed with a bloop single down the right-field line that chased home Williams for the 2-0 advantage.

“(Eskew) throws a lot of stuff that moves and spins and a lot of it runs that way,” Woodlawn coach Matt Patterson said. “We were trying to crowd a little bit and drive that way. And the kids executed.”

The Lady Spartans offense generated three hits in the game, and Ethridge held WSV hitless until the fourth inning. Hannah Witter broke up the no-hitter with a single to lead off the fourth. Alicia Kabat reached after a single in the sixth for WSV but was stranded at second after a steal.

“We’ve been hitting the past few weeks, so I knew we were going to hit the ball,” Stanley said. “I was kind of leery on when we were going to start hitting the ball, but I feel like we played a good game.”

Waltonville/Sesser-Valier is 10-12 this season and opened regional play at Benton today. Woodlawn improved to 15-11 and hosts the winner of the Webber/Christ Our Rock game today.
