Rams tennis rolls past Benton

MT. VERNON – The Rams tennis team ended their regular season with a win Tuesday.

Mt. Vernon blanked Benton 4-0. The two teams played a sectional style format with a pair of singles players and two doubles teams. Mt. Vernon won every match in straight sets.

“It’s a good format because you play exactly what you’re going to play at sectional,” Mt. Vernon coach Dave Junkins said. “That’s what I was hoping for. I was hoping we’d finish kind of strong to give us some confidence going into sectional.”

Aaron Neibert was victorious 6-0, 6-0. Nathan Arnold was a 6-1, 6-2 winner.

“(Aaron) has had a good year,” Junkins said. “And he really just looked relaxed today. He was a really dominating player early on.

“Today, (Arnold) just came out and dominated.”

Cody Wilson and Jared Hatton were victorious 6-2, 6-4. Aaron Burge and Brandon Nabors won 6-2, 6-1.

Mt. Vernon ended the regular season at 8-5 overall. The Rams now turn their focus to the upcoming Carbondale sectional.

The Rams will compete against several other teams for spots at the state final. Tonight, coaches from the sectional will meet to determine the sectional seeds.

The top six singles players and doubles teams get seeds. Friday’s sectional starts at 1 p.m. Singles players and doubles teams who advance to Saturday’s semifinals qualify for state.
