South 7 recognizes trio of Rams

Fitzjerrells named to first team

The South Seven released its All-Conference Teams for boys basketball on Wednesday.

Mt. Vernon's Braden Fitzjerrells was named to the first team. Seniors Jake Pike and Shakari Hawkins were recognized as honorable mention. Hawkins led the Rams in scoring with 17 points a game, and Fitzjerrells added 16 each contest. Pike also ended the season with a double-digit average of 12.

I think it's a big credit to Braden for the other coaches in the conference to vote him as one of the top five players in the league,” Mt. Vernon coach Scott Gamber said. “Because this is a really good league this year.

I was glad that Shakari and Jake both got honorable mention there.”

Carbondale's Devontavious Payne was recognized as the conference's Most Valuable Player.

Other members of the first team were: Jake Wood (Centralia), Darius Austin (Cahokia), Jordan Goodwin (Althoff) and Allen Billinger (Carbondale).

Other members of the second team were: Lavonte Sutton (Carbondale), Jared Simmons-Young (Centralia), Carleton Rivers (Cahokia), Kevin Renner (Althoff) and Moe Jackson (Marion).

It's a tough league this year,” Gamber said. “This is one of the first times where it was really difficult to pick just 10 guys.”

Other members selected as honorable mention were: Ryan Obermeier (Centralia), Chase Alcorn (Centralia), Shamarc Bursey (Carbondale), Brendon Gooch (Althoff) and Carsen Cash (Marion).
