Special Olympics basketball event draws crowd to Changnon Gym

MT. VERNON — Dozens of competitors gathered in Changnon Gym for a charitable cause Wednesday night.

The second annual Slam Jam to benefit Mt. Vernon Township High School Special Olympics/Project UNIFY was held. Attendees competed in free throw, 3-point and slam dunk contests.

“We had a really nice turnout,” MVTHS Special Olympics Athletic Director Megan Clodi said. “Most of our participants were interested in the 3-point contest. We only had a couple for the free throw and two for the dunk, but it was still a very enjoyable night. I think everybody had a good time.”

Clodi added she was happy with the amount of students who have embraced the Homecoming week event.

“We’ll absolutely do it again next year,” Clodi said. “And we hope to have maybe some more student involvement through Project UNIFY to help recruit more participants, including staff and additional community members, to help us grow.”

Bryce Hunter, a sophomore at Mt. Vernon, won the free throw shooting contest. Junior Ty’Rezz Moore was the 3-point champion. Keyante Haywood-Lockhart, a junior, upset reigning champion Leonte Badger in the slam dunk contest.

“The students are pretty supportive of one another, and they’re really supportive of (Special Olympic athletes),” Clodi said. “We had several former Special Olympic athletes that came and competed, and they were really good with cheering them on.”
