Rams host Cahokia in Homecoming matchup

MT. VERNON — The Rams football team will try to bounce back from a frustrating loss when they host Cahokia.

Mt. Vernon (0-6) hosts a traditionally athletic Cahokia (3-3) squad tonight. The Comanches have consistently run the ball this season, and Shayeen Edwards leads the ground attack with 766 yards on 127 carries. Edwards also has nine touchdowns. Keenan Hogan has added 353 rushing yards.

“They’ve done a good job of just sustaining (drives),” Mt. Vernon coach Jared Shaner said. “They’ve just been pounding out four or five, six yards pretty consistently. Then if you miss a tackle or have someone out of position a six-yard run can turn into a 20-yard run pretty quick.”

Shaner said one of the major differences between this year’s Cahokia team and last season’s is the linemen.

“I think their line looks improved from last year,” Shaner said. “They get off both sides of the ball pretty well. They don’t do a whole lot offensively, but what they do they do pretty good.”

Last week the Rams dominated Carbondale in the opening half of play. Mt. Vernon built a 14-0 lead after the first two quarters and were driving in the third quarter to go ahead 28-7 before a fumble. After the turnover, the Terriers took control and scored three straight times for a 28-21 lead. Mt. Vernon tied the game before losing by a touchdown.

“I think what we ran into is a little complacency on our part,” Shaner said. “And then Carbondale picked up the intensity in the second half, and we didn’t rematch that intensity.”

Tonight’s game starts at 7 p.m. Other South Seven matchups are: Marion at Centralia and Althoff at Carbondale.
