WOODLAWN —

The Lady Cardinals disrupted the offensive rhythm of the Sesser-Valier/Waltonville girls basketball team but couldn't establish one of their own Wednesday night.

The Lady Red Devils went on to claim a 26-12 win over Woodlawn.

There's a reason there 6-0, and they're good,” Woodlawn coach Matt Patterson said. “(They have) tons of size, and that bothered us a lot.”

Cheyenne Pitchford led SVW with 12 points and added four rebounds. Rachel Marlo finished with four points and eight rebounds for the Lady Red Devils.

Lexy Knox paced Woodlawn with five points and six rebounds.

Woodlawn packed its zone defense deep into the paint against SVW. The Lady Red Devils had a superior height advantage in the matchup. SVW started the game, trying to shoot Woodlawn out of the zone, but struggled to hit jumpers from the perimeter.

They were packing it in,” SVW coach Rick Metcalf said. “We missed some wide open looks. We had all kinds of wide open looks. We missed some shots, but the girls got flustered because of the way the game was being officiated.”

Despite the Lady Red Devils slow start on offense, Woodlawn never threatened to claim the lead. SVW held an 8-1 edge after the opening quarter, and built a 15-4 advantage at halftime. Woodlawn shot just four of 29 from the field in the game.

Pitchford aided the Lady Red Devils attack to start the second half. The junior hit a trio of field goals in the third to help SVW lengthen its edge to 21-4.

Woodlawn was able to draw fouls on SVW throughout the game but finished three of 12 from the foul line.

With them being aggressive, I thought we could get to the line and get to the bonus,” Patterson said.

Woodlawn played the game without Alanah Chelf, Carly Ethridge and Catherine Coleman.

On the offensive end, it hurt us a little bit,” Patterson said. “Carly's somebody that we go to. (She can) shoot the ball from the outside and provide us with a little size inside that we don't have without her.”

SVW is 6-0 this season. Woodlawn dropped to 2-4 overall and hosts North Clay tonight.
