Hines Sight: Turkey and Basketball

Season starts with plenty of tournaments

MT. VERNON —

The high school basketball season is bearing down on Jefferson County and as usual most teams start their years with tournaments.

Mt. Vernon's boys team travels down to Herrin for the annual Pyramid Plus Tournament. The event alternates each year between the current host and Marion. Two years ago when Herrin last hosted the tournament, the Rams claimed the title.

The event features one new team this year St. Louis Soldan. The other teams included are: Collinsville, Salem, Herrin and Marion. Last season Mt. Vernon finished 2-2, including a double overtime defeat to Collinsville.

The format for the tournament will be three games each night starting Monday Nov. 25 through Saturday, Nov. 30. The tournament takes a break Thanksgiving day. Mt. Vernon's opener is at 7 p.m. Monday against conference foe Marion. They follow with matchups against Herrin, Salem, Collinsville and St. Louis Soldan.

Waltonville and Webber will both participate in the Christopher Turkey Tournament. The event starts Monday, Nov. 25.

Woodlawn's boys team kicks off its season a bit later in the Okawville Post Turkey Tournament, which starts the opening week of December.

Mt. Vernon's girls team will again travel west for the annual Nashville Tournament. The Lady Rams were runners up a season ago to the host and eventual state champion Hornettes. This season the Lady Rams are in a pool group with Okawville, Mascoutah and Massac County. Mt. Vernon opens with Okawville at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26. The Lady Rockets won 25 games last season.

Woodlawn's girls team travels south for the DuQuoin Invitational Tournament, which runs Nov. 19-26. Webber's Lady Trojans are the lone county team not involved in a tournament to start the season and host Gallatin County on Tuesday.
