Woodlawn tops Odin

WOODLAWN — The Lady Cardinals used late offense to put Tuesday's softball matchup with Odin out of reach.

Woodlawn won the game 8-1, and scored four times with two outs in the sixth to blow the game open.

Today we kind of pushed through and built that lead up,” Woodlawn coach Matt Patterson said.

Kiara Lueking started the scoring in the sixth for Woodlawn when she smacked a drive off the left field fence. The extra-base hit chased home Hallie Hill and made the margin 5-1. Catherine Coleman followed with an RBI single. Lexy Knox blooped a double to short left field and came around to score later in the inning on Carly Ethridge's RBI single to make the score 8-1.

Woodlawn opened the game with a run in the first inning to take a quick 1-0 edge. The Lady Cardinals padded the lead with runs in the fourth and fifth innings before the late offense. Allison England knocked two runs in with a long drive to the deepest part of center field.

I thought we hit some balls really hard today,” Patterson said. “We struggled last Friday. This girl threw the ball a little harder so we weren't really sure what we were going to get, but we did a pretty good job of squaring some things up. And hopefully that leads to better things the rest of the week.”

Carly Ethridge pitched a complete game for Woodlawn in the circle and worked out of several jams in the middle innings. Odin's lone run of the game came in the fifth after a leadoff triple. The Lady Eagles stranded a pair of runs in the inning and also left the bases loaded in the fourth.

I thought (Ethridge) did a pretty good job,” Patterson said. “She was fighting an ankle, and I think she had a muscle cramping up on her. But she fought through and did a pretty job. She didn't have her best stuff but found a way to do a really good job and limit the hits and runs.”

Woodlawn is 4-2 this season and 1-0 in Midland Trail Conference action. The Lady Cardinals host Carmi today.
