MT. VERNON —
Now that everyone has stuffed their stomachs with a bevy of Christmas goodies, a buffet of basketball is here.
It’s Christmas basketball tournament time and several Jefferson County squads will be in area tournaments over the coming days.
The Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament starts this morning. Woodlawn enters as the top seed with county rival Waltonville as the No. 3. The Spartans start the tournament with an early morning 10:30 a.m. game against Zeigler-Royalton. Woodlawn’s tournament begin at 6 p.m. with a matchup against Elverado.
Mt. Vernon’s boys and girls start post-Christmas play on Thursday.
The Rams travel to the Centralia Holiday Tournament and begin action at 10 a.m. against Oak Lawn Richards.
The Lady Rams travel west to Mascoutah where they will open the tournament at 11:30 a.m. Thursday against Belleville West.
The Rams enter tournament play looking to get back on track after a loss at Marion on Friday night. The defeat was their second consecutive road loss in South Seven Conference play.
The matchup mirrored the first between the two teams. Marion jumped out to a big early lead against the Rams and never looked back. Mt. Vernon struggled to find its shooting stroke. After a big run to cut the deficit down, the Wildcats pulled away.
The Lady Rams enter their tournament with just one loss. It came against perennial powerhouse Nashville the first week of the season. The Lady Rams continue to play without Haley Lockhart who injured her knee against Centralia earlier this month. The Lady Rams have won four straight games despite her absence.
All three of the tournament culminate with championship games Saturday night.
