Rams dominate Fairfield

MT. VERNON — The Rams wrestling team recorded seven pins on its way to a 68-12 win against Fairfield on Thursday night.

Fairfield scored two pins in the match but never threatened the Rams.

“The score does not reflect it, but Fairfield’s a tough team,” Mt. Vernon coach Sean Docherty said. “They have gotten so much better than what they have been over the last couple years.”

Nolan Ford (220) and Justin Armstrong (285) started the match with back-to-back pins for the Rams. Kalen Roberts (106) made the score 16-0 Mt. Vernon after a major decision win. Quentin Favors (120) followed with a technical fall to put Mt. Vernon up 27-0.

“Everybody understood what their role was and what they needed to get done,” Docherty said. “They just tried to get the maximum amount of points they could.”

Fairfield’s only points of the match came in the 126 and 132 weight classes where the Mules had back-to-back pins to cut the Rams lead to 27-12.

Mt. Vernon responded with five straight pins from Michael Gray (138), Jacob Williamson (145), Demontez Miller-Grey (160), Alex Vosburgh (170) and Alex Hopkins (182). The pins gave Mt. Vernon a 63-12 lead.

Tristan Penrod (195) ended the match with a technical fall win.

“Whenever we’re doing a dual meet, I want the win. I want the pins however way we can get it however fast we can get it,” Docherty said. “They did that tonight.”

Josiah Fitzjerrells and Chase Vosburgh both won on Fairfield forfeits.

Mt. Vernon is 10-4 this season and travels to Olney on Saturday to face Taylorville and Robinson. The Rams have one home match remaining before the South Seven Conference meet followed by the regional.

“I didn’t know what kind of team we would be at the end of the season,” Docherty said. “I didn’t know how things were going to be, and I’ve been really happy with their progression that they’ve made throughout the season.”
