ELKVILLE — Galatia-Thompson used a big second-half run to beat Webber’s girls basketball team 41-31 Wednesday night in the Elverado 1A regional semifinal.

“We got a lot of wide open looks,” Webber coach Travis Pinkston said. “We didn’t make any wide-open jump shot that I can remember.”

Sarah Ganieany led the Lady Trojans with 10 points and finished with seven rebounds. Courtney Girvan added seven points and seven rebounds.

After a back and forth first half of play, Galatia-Thompsonville took control midway through the third quarter. The Lady Bearcats used a 14-2 run to open up a 31-23 edge. Kaylee Potter stopped the surge with a bucket that made the score 33-25.

“We are a slow-down offense a lot,” Pinkston said. “We didn’t necessarily have trouble with pressure defense as far as offensively. I thought we got a lot of open looks. We just didn’t drop anything.”

With a comfortable advantage, the Lady Bearcats used point guard Tayler Sweet to run down the clock. Sweet dribbled in and around Webber defenders. Several times she slashed to the basket for layups. Sweet finished the game with 19 points.

“We were running at her instead of keeping her in front,” Pinkston said.

Webber could never recover from the Lady Bearcats run. Several times the Lady Trojans sliced the deficit to single digits but could never got closer than nine points.

Webber used some early hot shooting to take a 10-4 lead into the second quarter. Ganieany helped pace the offense with a pair of buckets in the final minute of the opening quarter. Galatia-Thompsonville quickly erased Webber’s early lead at the start of the second quarter with a run that tied the game at 11.

The game was Pinkston’s last after four seasons coaching the Lady Trojans.

“I have kids that are seven, and I don’t want to miss out on their stuff,” Pinkston said. “On top of it being (the seniors) last game, I had to let them know I wasn’t returning.”

Webber finished the season 12-15. Galatia-Thompsonville faces Wayne City in tonight championship game. Wayne City topped Elverado 54-37.
