Juniors sweep Centralia

MT. VERNON —

The Junior Legion Post 141 team swept a pair of games from Centralia on Friday.

Mt. Vernon won 5-4 in dramatic fashion in the opener before blasting to a 10-0 win in the latter game.

Pitching was good all night,” Mt. Vernon coach Brian McPherson said. “I was pleased with the pitching both games. We hit the ball pretty well, put the ball in play.”

Mt. Vernon's Storment stepped to the plate in the bottom of the seventh with the game knotted in the opening game.

Centralia brought its infield in, hoping to keep Sean Scott at third on a ground ball. Storment lined a single into left field, and Scott trotted home with the winning run.

His bat's been hot,” McPherson said. “He's been one of our one or two hitters the last six, eight games. I had a lot of confidence he was going to put the ball in play.”

Mt. Vernon kept the winning momentum moving in the second game. The junior legion squad scored in every inning except the fourth against Centralia. Post 141 took a 2-0 edge after two innings and tacked on a trio of runs in the third to build a comfortable 5-0 edge.

They seemed to get into the game a lot better, a lot quicker,” McPherson said. “They seemed more ready to play the second game.”

Dalton Beck didn't waste the offense. The Mt. Vernon hurler threw a complete game shutout. Beck finished with five strikeouts.

Ryan Campbell batted in the leadoff spot in both games. He drew five walks during the evening of action.

That's why he's leadoff,” McPherson said. “He finds a way to get on base. He's good a great eye.”

Storment finished the evening with three hits and three RBI. Jackson Horton added two hits and three RBI. Braden Smith added a hit and two RBI in the 10-0 romp.

Zach Brookman was the winning pitcher in the opener. He came in to relieve Reed Millwood, who started and threw three innings.

Mt. Vernon is 13-4 this season and travels to Trenton for a doubleheader today.
