Rams top Alton

Mt. Vernon's baseball team edged Alton 8-7 Monday.Brock Fulkerson was the winning pitcher and improved to 6-1 on the season. Tyler Ellis completed the game and earned the save. Fulkerson finished with three strikeouts and allowed four earned runs.Hayden Poninski had three hits, including a triple, and two RBI for Mt. Vernon. Landon Thomas added two hits and two RBI.Jake Pike, Matthew Williams and Collin Young had two hits and an RBI each.Mt. Vernon is 17-5 this season and hosts Cahokia for a South Seven Conference matchup today.

Woodlawn baseball stomps Grayville

Woodlawn topped Grayville 10-0 in five innings Monday.Garrett Minks threw a one-hitter for the Cardinals and finished with 10 strikeouts.Matt Kennedy finished with two hits, including a double. Derek Kehrer had a hit and two RBI. Bryson Sanders and Minks both had a hit and RBI each.Woodlawn is 7-6 this season and travels to Hamilton County today.

Lady Cardinals cruise past Grayville

Woodlawn's softball team beat Grayville 7-2 Monday.Paige Tufts was the winning pitcher. She threw a complete game and finished with eight strikeouts.Cassandra Lueking had three hits and three RBI to pace the Woodlawn offense. Paige Tufts, Payton Tufts, Kelsea Bock and Allison England all had a hit and an RBI each.Woodlawn is 11-8 this season and 5-0 in the Midland Trail Conference. The Lady Cardinals host Okawville today.

Lady Rams placed fourth at Marion

Mt. Vernon's girls track team finished fourth in the Marion Invitational.The Lady Rams ended the event with 59 points. Carbondale won the title with 142. Benton placed second with 74, and Herrin finished third with 68.First-place finishers for Mt. Vernon were: Aaliyah Palmer in the discus with a throw of 104 feet, 10 inches. Charde Golliday won the 200 meter dash in a time of 26.72 seconds.Second-place finishers were: Allie Skobel in the 3,200 meters (12:56) and the 3,200 meter relay team of Ashley Paulson, Camilla Bauer, Zoe Mattingly and Rebecca Rexing (11:13).Third-place finishers were: Golliday in the 100 meters (13.16 seconds), Bauer in the 1,600 meters (6:09.90) and Palmer in the shot put (37 feet, 3 inches).Fourth-place finishers were: Golliday in the long jump (13 feet, 10 inches).Sixth-place finishers were: Zoe Mattingly in the 1,600 meters (6:17).Mt. Vernon hosts Centralia in a home dual meet today.

Parks department to host softball league

The Mt. Vernon Parks and Recreation Department is hosting several mens softball leagues this spring.The deadline for registration is Friday, and the cost is $390 per team.Teams will play a 16-game regular season followed by a postseason tournament.     This summer might have been more critical than usual for player development within the Lady Rams basketball program.

    We graduated six seniors, and we're not kidding ourselves in saying we're going to be veteran because we're not,” Mt. Vernon coach Jeff Lonnon said.

  • Rams spend time at SIU football camp

    The Rams football team spent a little time away from their traditional summer practice setting at the end of last week.

    On Thursday close to three dozen sophomores, juniors and seniors traveled to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale for a football team camp. The camp, which included three other high schools, wrapped up Saturday.

  • Sam Root award Root calls award 'humbling'

    Webber's baseball team capped the season with several individual honors, and coach Sam Root recently added to the postseason awards list.

    Root, who guided the Trojans to the 1A state finals in Peoria this spring, was named the Southern Illinois Baseball Coaches Association 1A Coach of the Year.
