Lady Rams fall to Carbondale

MT. VERNON — The Lady Rams volleyball team was hoping to build some momentum for the upcoming postseason tournament against Carbondale on Thursday.

Despite a two-game loss, Mt. Vernon coach Angie Carroll said she was happy with her team’s effort in the match. Carbondale won 25-14, 25-13.

“Carbondale hit really well,” Carroll said. “They were a better team than the last time that we played them, but I just think if we would have played like this against Centralia (earlier in the week) that we would have beat them.”

Carbondale won the battle at the net with several heavy hitters who put pressure on the Mt. Vernon blockers. The Lady Terriers’ defense also limited the Mt. Vernon attack

“We knew they weren’t hitting line any so we moved the block in, and that just really worked and shut them down,” Carbondale coach Fae Ragan said.

Behind the strong hitters, Carbondale doubled its lead against the Lady Rams at 18-9. Mt. Vernon briefly closed the deficit down to seven after back-to-back kills from Hannah Owens and Kirsten McGowen. Owens finished the match with two kills, and McGowen added three to lead the team. The Lady Terriers never allowed Mt. Vernon closer in the opening game and won after Aaliyah Palmer served a ball long.

“We need to work on some things, but overall I can’t really complain too much because that’s the most intense we have looked in probably a couple weeks,” Carroll said.

Palmer helped the Lady Rams open the second game strong with a pair of aces to lead 2-0. Owens tied the game at four with a tip, and the Lady Rams took the lead after a Carbondale hitting error. But the Lady Terriers tied the game and scored seven of the next eight points to grab a 12-6 edge. The Lady Terriers maintained a comfortable lead throughout the game to win the match.

Mt. Vernon is 16-10 this season and opens the regional tournament Tuesday at Centralia.
