MT. VERNON – The Rams tennis team lost 7-2 to Carbondale on Monday.
The Terriers haven't lost a match this season.“Their one through six are probably a little bit better than us overall,” Mt. Vernon coach Dave Junkins said. “It should have been a closer match, but they outplayed us. It's one of those nights. We just got beat.”Mt. Vernon's won a match in singles and a doubles match. Jared Hatton was the team's singles winner at No. 4. The sophomore played his match with a wrap on his sprained left wrist. “He played fine. He really played real well,” Junkins said. “It was a nice match.”The team of Aaron Burge and Brandon Nabors won in No. 2 doubles action.“I put them back together the last couple matches we played,” Junkins said. “They're both athletic. They fly around the court, and when they're playing well they're very emotional.”Monday's match started a string of difficult competition for the Rams that includes Centralia, Carmi, Effingham and Althoff.Mt. Vernon is 7-2 this season and hosts the Orphans at 4 p.m. today.
