Rams roll past Murphysboro

Mt. Vernon’s baseball team beat Murphysboro 12-5 Monday.

The Rams exploded for five runs in the third inning. The big blow was Colten Meador’s three-run homer. Meador finished with two hits in the game.

Pat Bradford added a two-run double to close out the scoring for the Rams in the third. Bradford had two hits, two RBI and stole a base.

The Rams swiped nine bases against the Murphysboro pitching staff.

Collin Young led the Rams with five RBI and had two hits.

Tyler Ellis was the winning pitcher. He threw two innings and allowed just one hit.

Mt. Vernon is 21-5 this season and hosts Carbondale.

Late goal helps Lady Rams win

Alex Pigg scored Mt. Vernon’s game-winning goal with about 15 minutes left against Massac County on Monday.

The score gave the Lady Rams a 3-2 lead and came off an assist from Whitney Warner.

Mt. Vernon erased a two-goal deficit in the matchup. Warner converted a penalty kick in the opening half to close the gap to 2-1. Betsy Kueker tied the game with a goal late in the first half.

Mt. Vernon is 10-5-1 this season. The Lady Rams have lost just once since a 1-4-1 start to the season. Mt. Vernon travels to Marion.

Woodlawn baseball tops Morrisonville

Woodlawn beat Morrisonville 7-2 Saturday.

Brendan Petersen was the winning pitcher and threw five innings for the Cardinals. He finished with three strikeouts.

Matt Kennedy had three hits and an RBI for Woodlawn. Petersen added two hits and two RBI. Derek Kehrer, Nathan Arnold and Garrett Minks all had a hit.

Woodlawn is 11-6 this season.

Lady Spartans fall to Odin

The Waltonville/Sesser-Valier softball team lost 1-0 to Odin on Monday.

The Lady Spartans finished the game with four hits and two errors.

    The Rams football team spent a little time away from their traditional summer practice setting at the end of last week.

    On Thursday close to three dozen sophomores, juniors and seniors traveled to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale for a football team camp. The camp, which included three other high schools, wrapped up Saturday.

    Webber's baseball team capped the season with several individual honors, and coach Sam Root recently added to the postseason awards list.

    Root, who guided the Trojans to the 1A state finals in Peoria this spring, was named the Southern Illinois Baseball Coaches Association 1A Coach of the Year.
