Miller advances to final round

CHARLESTON — Chelsea Miller will represent the Sesser-Valier/Waltonville girls track team in multiple events at Saturday’s state final round.

Miller had the fastest qualifying time in the 200 meters at the 1A state final preliminary round held in Charleston on Thursday. She won her heat and ended with a time of 25.76 seconds. She turned in the second fastest qualifying time in the 100 meters. Miller won her heat with a time of 12.63 seconds.

She also qualified in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, nine and a quarter inches.

Teammates Rae Lappin and Emily Vandeveer joined her in the preliminaries but didn’t qualify for Saturday’s round.

Rae Lappin had a 31 feet, 10 and three quarter inch leap in the triple jump. Vandeveer cleared four feet, 10 inches in the high jump.

Miller starts Saturday’s final round with the long jump at 10 a.m. She will compete in the 100 meters at 1:35 p.m. and ends the day with the 200 meters at 4:05 p.m.

Lady Rams win at Mascoutah

Mt. Vernon’s softball team beat Mascoutah 12-9 in extra innings Thursday.

“We played two different games,” Mt. Vernon coach Lance Boldt said. “The first half of the game was as if we weren’t ready to go.”

Mt. Vernon trailed early and was down 8-4 in the sixth inning before the game went into extras.

Summer Hobson, Hannah Wright and Lauren Wilson all had RBI hits in the eighth inning to help Mt. Vernon claim the win.

Wright was the winning pitcher in relief for Mt. Vernon. She threw two innings and had two strikeouts.

Haley Chelf started the game and lasted one inning. Casey Little threw five innings. Little finished with three strikeouts.

“With that we didn’t have a chance,” Boldt said. “She stabilized things for us, which was really, really promising to see.”

Wright had three hits and four RBI. Page Clinton added two hits and scored four runs. Alexis Stewart added two hits and two RBI. Wilson also had a hit and two RBI.

Mt. Vernon is 11-14 overall this season and travel to Salem today.

    On Thursday close to three dozen sophomores, juniors and seniors traveled to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale for a football team camp. The camp, which included three other high schools, wrapped up Saturday.
