Area teams contend for titles

Sam Root and Mike Kehrer have had their baseball teams in this position before.

Root and Webber are making their third straight regional final appearance today. Kehrer and Woodlawn are trying to claim its third straight regional crown.“It feels real good to go into another regional final game like this,” Kehrer said. The two Jefferson County teams meet today. The two teams faced for the regional title two years ago. Woodlawn won on its way to the super-sectional. Last season Webber lost to Gallatin County in its regional final while Woodlawn made a run to the sectional.“I think we're used to the moment to not make it not quite seem so large as far as pressure,” Root said. “And we're just happy to be at our home field this year. The last two years we lost at Woodlawn and then Gallatin we had to play on their home field.”The teams will lean on their pitching aces in the matchup. Rend Lake College signee Ty Henderson will start for Webber while Logan Isaac will step to the mound for the Cardinals.“We're both going to be throwing our No. 1s,” Kehrer said. “It's going to be an exciting game. We both play each other tough when we do play.”Webber advanced to the final after a 4-1 win over Thompsonville in the semi. Jordan Wheeler threw a complete game in the victory.“We couldn't be anymore battled tested than we are,” Root said. “So it just comes down to executing and stepping up the moment during (today's game).”Woodlawn scraped past Norris City/Omaha/Enfield 3-2. Matt Kennedy started the game, and Isaac came in for relief. Bryson Sanders helped the Woodlawn offense delivering the game-winning hit in the sixth inning. Both schools are members of the Midland Trail Conference and faced twice during the regular season with each winning on the opponent's home field.“We're familiar with them. They're familiar with us,” Root said. “It doesn't matter who we're playing. It's about what we have to do to be successful.”Today's game starts at 1 p.m.
