---- — Palmer advances at track state
Mt. Vernon’s Aaliyah Palmer will compete in two events at today’s 2A girls track and field state final.
Palmer qualified from Friday’s preliminary round in the shot put and discus. Palmer threw the shot put 39 feet, 11 inches. The mark topped the school’s record in the event and was also a personal best for Palmer.
In the discus, Palmer finished with a throw of 112 feet, 10 inches.
Teammate Charde Golliday raced in the 400 meters on Friday but didn’t advance. The freshman finished her heat in a time of 1:00.27.
Palmer competes starting with the shot put at 10 a.m. this morning. She will throw the discus at 1:25 p.m.
Neibert qualifies for tennis state
Aaron Neibert advanced to the Carbondale boys tennis sectional semifinals.
Neibert enters the sectional as the No. 3 seed in singles and won a pair of matches on Friday. All singles players and doubles teams that advance to the sectional semifinals qualify for state.
Neibert will compete in the semifinals today.
Lady Rams fall to Salem
Mt. Vernon’s softball team lost at Salem 4-1 on Friday.
Page Clinton had three hits and an RBI. Alexis Stewart added three hits and scored a run. Hannah Wright finished with two hits, and Lauren Wilson added a hit.
Mt. Vernon is 11-15 overall this season and travels to Herrin to play Carbondale in the opening round of the regional Tuesday.
Gridiron club to hold meeting
The Rams Gridiron Club will hold a meeting at 6:45 p.m. Monday.
The meeting will be held in the football meeting room at the stadium. Individuals can enter at the concession stand doorway.
Lady Cardinals share MTC title
Woodlawn’s softball team beat Cisne 18-0 to tie Wayne City for the Midland Trail Conference regular season title.
Carly Ethridge was the winning pitcher and pitched six innings while recording seven strikeouts.
Cassandra Lueking had three hits and five RBI. Paige Tufts added three hits and three RBI. Ethridge finished with four hits and three RBI.
Woodlawn is 17-11 this season and plays for the 1A regional title against Wayne City at 11 a.m.
Golfer knocks hole-in-one
Dick Jones recorded a hole-in-one at Indian Hills Golf Course in Mt. Vernon.
The shot came on hole No. 2. It’s his third hole-in-one on No. 2 and fifth of his career.
Bud Edwards, Sean Hall and Eric Owens witnessed the shot.
