Salem knocks off Lady Rams

MT. VERNON —

The Lady Rams volleyball team didn't have an answer for Salem on Monday night in a two-game loss.

Salem won the match 25-14, 25-15.

We just looked like we were in slow motion all night long,” Mt. Vernon coach Angie Higgins said. “The girls were really peppy before the game.

We were just slow all night on our feet.”

Whitney Jones and Hannah Owens both had two kills each to lead the Lady Rams.

Errors hurt Mt. Vernon throughout the match. The Lady Rams finished with 21 miscues. Many came in the team's passing game.

Passing were probably what most of our errors were from,” Higgins said.

Salem doubled the Lady Rams up at 14-7 midway through the opening game. Mt. Vernon closed the gap to four points at 17-13 after a kill from Rachel Kirsch. But Salem responded with a run to open the game up and extend its lead to double digits. Hannah Owens knocked a shot long, and Salem's edge grew to 23-13.

Salem's Kyla Cook ended the game with a kill.

Salem charged to another lead in the second game. Cook put her team up 10-6 before Mt. Vernon briefly battled back into the game. Kirsten McGowen blocked a kill attempt to draw Mt. Vernon to within 13-10. That was as close as the Lady Rams got.

Salem stormed to a 25-15 finished after a kill from Cassie Brashear.

Mt. Vernon is 5-5 this season and travels to Cahokia on Thursday.
