Doubles team pushes Lady Rams to win

MT. VERNON —

Gauri Kaushal and Amanda Scott teamed up for a critical win against Flora on Wednesday.

With the girls tennis match tied at four all, Mt. Vernon's Kaushal and Scott won at No. 2 doubles to give the Lady Rams a victory. Kaushal and Scott won 6-4, 7-6(8-6) after rallying from a three-point deficit in the second set.

We knew going in Flora's a really good team, that we were really going to have to play well to beat them,” Mt. Vernon coach Randy Knox said. “We tried to tell them in practice that it's going to be really close. It's going to come down to a last game, a last match. I think our girls were ready for it.”

The match was split three all after the singles portion of action..

Mt. Vernon's Jade Knox won 6-1, 6-3 over Bailey Pearce at No. 1. Shubhika Jain and Kaushal were also two-set winners for the Lady Rams in singles.

(Jade) played a real good match, and all the matches were nip and tuck just back and forth a game here a game there,” Knox said. “Gauri Kaushal and Shubhika Jain they did a real nice job in their matches.”

The longest singles match of the day came between Mt. Vernon's Catie Raney and Brooke Winka. Winka outdueled Raney for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-7 (10-12) win.

(Raney) came back after losing the first set, played really well,” Knox said.

Mt. Vernon is 5-0 this season and travels to the O'Fallon Quad Tournament on Saturday.
