Lady Rams battle back against Woodlawn

MT. VERNON — — The Lady Rams battled back for a three-game win against Woodlawn in a raucous Changnon Gym on Thursday night.

Mt. Vernon won the match 25-27, 25-18, 25-22.

Kirsten McGowan ended the back and forth match with a tip that dropped to the floor. The winning point touched off a celebration on the Lady Rams side.

The decisive game was back and forth throughout with each team scrambling to hold control and momentum. The game was tied at 18 before Mt. Vernon edged to a 24-20 lead after an ace from Alexis Stewart.

The advantage started to slip away after McGowen knocked a pair of kill attempts into the net. But the front row hitter ended the game with the tip.

The opening game was more of the same as the two teams traded points throughout. Every lead for the Lady Rams and Lady Cardinals was a slim point or two. Once a team established control, the other ripped it back.

The game didn't end at 25 and surged into extra points. But after Rachel Kirsch sent a shot long, and Woodlawn's Regan Witzel knocked an ace the Lady Cardinals were a game away from the victory.

Hannah Bock and Annie Wehrheim played key roles in the Woodlawn attack against Mt. Vernon. Both players had several kills throughout the opening game to help the Lady Cardinals claim the first game.

Mt. Vernon seized the momentum back from Woodlawn in the second.

The Lady Rams erased an early deficit and tied the game at 15. Mt. Vernon took control of the game late.

Kirsch put Mt. Vernon up at 20-17 with an ace. After a block from Mariah Rush and Whitney Jones, Mt. Vernon's lead was five. The Lady Rams closed the game out with a pair of points.

Woodlawn hosts Cisne next week in a match was that moved to Wednesday. Mt. Vernon returns to the court in its South Seven Conference opener at home against Marion on Thursday.
