MT. VERNON —
The Rams tennis team swept past Salem 9-0 Wednesday.
It was the opening match of the season for Mt. Vernon after three cancelations to start the year under first year boys coach Randy Knox.
“You can only practice so much and still be able to keep your focus when you're playing your own team,” Knox said. “We really need to get out here and play another team. I was real happy with how they played.”
Mt. Vernon won seven of the nine matches in two sets. Nathan Arnold and Dalton McGowen won in three sets for the Rams. Arnold won at No. 1 singles against Keshav Jha 5-6, 7-5, 6-1. He rallied from an opening set loss to win the matchup.
“Nathan lost the first set but kept his composure and made some adjustments, and won the second and third sets” Knox said. “(I'm) real happy with how everybody played for a first match.”
McGowan beat Zac Schilling 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 for his victory at No. 3 singles.
Jared Hatton beat Carter Smith in No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-4. Dalton Barnes was a winner at No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-1. Madison Wellmaker was victorious in No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-3. Austin Martin won at No. 6 singles 6-3, 6-3.
Arnold and Hatton teamed together for a win in No. 1 doubles 7-5, 6-2. McGowen and Martin won at No. 2 doubles 6-1, 6-3. Barnes and Wellmaker was victorious 6-2, 6-1.
McGowen and Martin are both new to the team this season, and Knox said he was pleased with the duo's play against Salem.
“They're a couple of people that can keep getting better I think as they get more experience, and that's what they really needed,” Knox said.
Mt. Vernon is 1-0 this season and stays at home today against Flora.
