Woodlawn softball tops ZRC

Ethridge knocks in 3 runs, throws complete game

The Lady Cardinals softball team held off Zeigler-Royalton/Christopher 8-4 Wednesday.

We had a lead and did a good job of tacking (runs) onto it,” Woodlawn coach Matt Patterson said. “We kind of relieved some stress late in the game.”

Carly Ethridge pitched a complete game for Woodlawn in the victory and finished with two strikeouts.

I thought she was really good today,” Patterson said. “She struggled a little bit early with some location, but we had to find the pitches that worked today and once she found them she did a good job of staying down in the zone and getting quick outs.”

Ethridge also led a balanced Woodlawn attack at the plate. The top seven Lady Cardinals hitters all reached base at least once. Ethridge finished with a hit, walk and three RBI.

I think everybody just chipped in a little bit, and it worked out pretty good,” Patterson said.

Woodlawn held a slim 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth. ZRC was threatening to tie the game with a runner on third and two outs. Ethridge ended the ZRC rally with a strikeout.

Woodlawn translated the defensive stop into offensive momentum and tacked on several late runs. Christy Barnes opened the bottom of the fifth with a double. Then with two outs, she came around to score on a Zeigler error to put Woodlawn up 6-4. Allison England widened the gap with an RBI single. Woodlawn's final run came in the seventh when Ethridge had an RBI groundout.

The two teams traded runs early in the game. Woodlawn struck first with a pair of tallies in the opening inning. ZRC knotted the game with two runs in the second.

Woodlawn answered with three in the bottom of the second. The offense included RBI hits from Harlow and Ethridge.

Woodlawn is 2-0 this season and hosts Carlyle today.
