Hines Sight: Sports teams embark on another fall season


Welcome to another fall sports season.

Tennis and golf teams have already started their seasons.

Today volleyball and soccer teams take the courts and field.

Early September will see the kickoff of the cross country seasons.

Each season is filled with its own twists and turns. The fall represents

the beginning of the high school yearly sports cycle. For the next 10

months teams will compete and strive for the state finals.

Jefferson County has been well represented at state over the past few

years. Woodlawn made back-to-back runs to the state basketball finals. The

 most recent trip two years ago ended with the ultimate prize - a state


The Mt. Vernon baseball team rolled its way to Joliet and the state

finals last spring. It marked the third trip to state for a Jefferson County team in as many years.

Mt. Vernon’s football tam enters the fall hoping success from the lower

levels translates to varsity victories. The opening test is a stern on with

three time defending state champion Rochester looming on Friday.

The Lady Rams volleyball team will have the task of trying to keep its success from a season ago going. The squad will have to make due without a key player, Molly Koester. The senior is still dealing with a knee injury and is out of the lineup.

David Modert will try to keep his state final run going. The senior Rams

cross country runner made an appearance last season and placed 34th

overall. He’ll be aiming for the all-state honors that accompany a top 25

finish this season.

The Lady Rams golf squad is looking to build on a second-place finish at

the South Seven Preview match in Centralia. The girls tennis team also

opened the year with an impressive win in Carbondale.

    With the resignation of Mt. Vernon boys basketball coach Scott Gamber becoming official at Monday's school board meeting, Mt. Vernon will look to move quickly to fill the position with summer workouts approaching. MVTHS principal Wes Olson said Tuesday the school will try to have a candidate at the May board meeting.
