Lady Rams sweep Benton

MT. VERNON — The Lady Rams tennis team didn't drop a set on their way to a 9-0 against Benton on Tuesday.

Catie Raney, Shubhika Jain, Amanda Scott and Liz Hurst were all 6-0, 6-0 winners for the Lady Rams in singles.

Singles, I thought we did a good job just staying consistent, being focused there,” Mt. Vernon coach Randy Knox said.

Jade Knox won her match at No. 1 singles over Emily Culbreth 6-0, 6-4. Gauri Kaushal topped Ashton Kubow 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

With the match victory locked up after the singles portion, Knox turned to some young players in the doubles flights.

Knox and Raney teamed for a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 1.

Abigail Winkler and Shreya Nair won 6-0, 6-0. Anessa Montgomery and Skylar Beckley won at No. 3 doubles 6-0, 6-1.

I was happy to move up some people into the varsity action and get some of our freshmen playing there at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles,” Knox said.

The victory helped the Lady Rams improved to 3-0 in duel matches this season. The win also came after a weekend win at the Marion Doubles Tournament for Mt. Vernon.

I was real happy with our singles players and how they've handled the heat and how they've just been determined to pull those matches out against good teams,” Knox said.

Mt. Vernon travels to Marion today.
