Lady Rams down Cahokia

Storm to 18-6 lead after first quarter

By Paul Hines

The Lady Rams used strong defense and consistent offense to beat Cahokia 58-30 Monday night.

The matchup was the South Seven Conference opener for both teams.

We played well in the first half,” Mt. Vernon coach Jeff Lonnon said. “That's probably as well as we've played. I thought the difference was the fact that our three man Makiah Rush really contributed in the scoring column.”

Hannah Owens led the Lady Rams with 16 points and battled inside all game against Cahokia's size in the post area.

She had her hands full in there tonight to say the least,” Lonnon said. “That matchup was a tough one for her because she was so outsized.”

Courtney Scarbrough was also in double figures with 12 points and hit a pair of outside shots in the opening quarter. Makiah Rush was a perfect five of five from the field and added 10 points.

Mt. Vernon seized the lead from the opening minutes of action. Rush put the Lady Rams up 4-2 after an offensive rebound putback with 6:25 left in the first quarter. Mt. Vernon never trailed again.

The Lady Rams led 15-6 late in the first, and Scarbrough beat the buzzer with her second 3-pointer of the period to put Mt. Vernon up 18-6.

Mt. Vernon stifled Cahokia's offense throughout the game. The Lady Comanches finished with 18 turnovers and tallied just 12 points in the opening half.

I thought defensively we were really good,” Lonnon said. “I thought we mixed it up between 1-3-1 and man to try to keep them off balance a little bit. That seemed to really work so we just kind of stayed with that.”

The solid offense and critical defense helped the Lady Rams build a comfortable 38-12 halftime edge.

Cahokia was plagued with foul trouble. A pair of players fouled out late and several finished with four. Mt. Vernon ended the game with 28 free throws and hit 18. A pair of foul shots from Scarbrough late in the third quarter gave the Lady Rams their largest edge at 47-19.

Mt. Vernon is 3-2 overall this season and 1-0 in conference action. The Lady Rams travel to Effingham St. Anthony on Thursday night.
