Cisne sweeps Woodlawn

WOODLAWN — The Lady Cardinals volleyball team couldn't shake off a slow start in a two-game loss Wednesday against Cisne.

Cisne won the match 25-23, 25-9.

I just don't know what happened,” Woodlawn coach Sara Lamczyk said. “It didn't seem as if anybody wanted to be here tonight, and it is very aggravating because we put in a lot of time.”

Annie Wehrheim led the Lady Cardinals with four kills. Alanah Chelf added two.

Cisne took control early in the opening game, jumping out to a 4-1 lead after Woodlawn's Regan Witzel bumped a ball that landed out of bounds.

Woodlawn trailed by several points until midway through the game when the Lady Cardinals engineered a rally. Woodlawn tied the game at 13 when Wehrheim scored a kill. A kill from Witzel gave Woodlawn a 15-14 edge. The Lady Cardinals again took the lead at 16-15 after a Cisne service error. Woodlawn managed to claw its way to a 23-21 edge late in the game after a Ryann French kill.

Woodlawn never led again.

Cisne ripped off four straight points to end the game.

They're not going to back down just because we're Woodlawn,” Lamczyk said. “People want to beat us so we have got to be ready for it.”

The Lady Lions cruised past Woodlawn in the second game. They raced to a 7-1 advantage, and led 14-6 when Kailee Sabin started serving. Woodlawn couldn't manage a side out until the score stood at 24-7.

If we go out and get beat, I'm fine with it, but when we go out and play with absolutely no passion and no heart it breaks my heart,” Lamczyk said.

As spectators exited the Woodlawn gymnasium, the Lady Cardinals took the court for a postgame practice session.

When you don't want to play in a game, then we're going to play afterwards,” Lamczyk said.

Woodlawn is 4-4 this season.
