The Lady Rams picked up their first South Seven Conference win of the season with a victory over Marion on Thursday night.
Mt. Vernon won the match 26-24, 25-22. The Lady Rams lost a lead and rallied to win the opening game. Mt. Vernon rallied and erased a Marion lead in the second game.
“They seemed a couple times where we got down that they looked like they may want to give up, but then they didn't and they came together as a team and just kept playing hard,” Mt. Vernon coach Angie Higgins said.
Rachel Kirsch led the Lady Rams with eight kills. Hannah Carbonaro added 10 assists. Whitney Jones finished with six blocks.Alexis Stewart led Mt. Vernon with 15 digs, and Madalina Overstreet finished with 13.
“Overall everybody was fairly consistent,” Higgins said. “No one or two people had an off game.”
The two teams traded points early before Mt. Vernon climbed to a 11-7 led after a kill from Kirsten McGowen. The Lady Rams lead stood at 17-11 after an Overstreet ace.
Marion battled back and scored seven straight points to seize an 18-17 edge. The lead swung back and forth between the two squads until late.
With the game tied at 24, the Lady Rams took advantage of a Marion hitting error followed by a kill from Kirsch to win.
In the second game, it was Marion who saw a lead slip away.
Mt. Vernon trailed 17-13 before battling back on the Lady Wildcats. Whitney Jones capped a Mt. Vernon run with a kill that gave the Lady Rams a 19-18 advantage. Marion tied the game at 19, but the Lady Rams surge to victory. Jones put Mt. Vernon up 23-19 with a kill. McGowen ended the game with a kill of her own.
Mt. Vernon is 5-4 this season and 1-2 in conference play.
“It is good to get a conference win,” Higgins said.
