The Lady Cardinals dominated Sandoval's volleyball team in two games Thursday night.
Woodlawn won the match 25-13, 25-8.
“I felt like we went out and took control of it,” Woodlawn coach Sara Lamczyk said. “I think we were in control most of the game. I did two different rotations tonight to try and see what worked and what didn't.”
Ryann French led the team with eight kills. Six came in the second game. Lamczyk said French was adjusting nicely to being moved into the middle of the front row.
“She's peaking, and it's at the right time,” Lamczyk said. “And she's just impressing me.
“This is her third game like that.”
Annie Wehrheim added seven kills, and Regan Witzel finished with two.
“I cannot say enough about Regan Witzel,” Lamczyk said. “She sets and hits and serves.
“They're all just going in the right direction, I think.”
The Lady Cardinals used just one blocker at the net throughout the match.
“I think it's nice to be able to do that because then you have more coverage (defensively),” Lamczyk said.
The Lady Cardinals rarely trailed in the match and stormed to a 13-4 lead in the opener after Wehrheim knocked down a kill. The lead reached double digits after Wehrheim denied a Sandoval attack with a block.
Sandoval's lone lead of the match came to start the second game. Bethany Kunick record an ace to put the Lady Blackhawks up 1-0.
Woodlawn tied the game at 1 and rattled off the next nine points. French put the Lady Cardinals up 10-1 with a kill. Woodlawn's edge ballooned to double digits late in the game. Taylor Murdock notched back-to-back aces to put Woodlawn ahead 23-8 before French ended the match with a pair of kills.
Woodlawn is 7-3 this season and travels to the Herrin Tournament on Saturday.
“I think they finally are (hitting their stride),” Lamczyk said. “I think you have to hit the bottom and go back up. It seems like every year we do that, and then we start picking it up from there.”
