WOODLAWN — The Lady Cardinals volleyball team won a tight match with Christopher on Wednesday.
Woodlawn was victorious 25-21, 25-23.
“That's a really solid team that we played,” Woodlawn coach Sara Lamczyk said. “We actually played them Saturday and lost to them in three. So to come back and beat them in two tonight was really, really awesome.”
Annie Wehrheim led the Lady Cardinals with 11 kills. Ryann French added six, and Hannah Bock had four.
“(Taytum Murdock) just puts it on a platter, and they've been sending it home.”
Woodlawn grabbed a slim lead early in the opening game and held it until midway through when Christopher seized the lead at 13-12
Woodlawn stormed back in front and claimed a 17-13 edge after Lexy Pedtke tipped a ball for a kill off a Christopher block.
Again, Christopher closed the gap and tied the game at 17. This time Wehrheim put the Lady Cardinals back in front with a kill. Woodlawn pulled away and established a cushion before Wehrheim ended the game with a kill.
“I think this is an awesome game to have and to have it at the middle of your season when you should be peaking,” Lamczyk said. “It's fun to play these kinds of games, and it's good for the girls to be down and up and be able to handle it.”
The Lady Cardinals cruised to a quick lead in the second game. Woodlawn built a 5-0 edge to start and never trailed.
Christopher rallied to close the gap late in the game, and briefly held a 23-22 lead. But Woodlawn finished the game with the final three points.
Wehrheim put Woodlawn put 24-23 with a pair of kills. The match ended when Christopher knocked a shot just wide.
Woodlawn is 10-6 this season and travels to Grayville today.
