Harlem Wizards bring show to Summersville

By Paul Hines

MT. VERNON — A traveling basketball team will make another appearance in Jefferson County next week.

The Harlem Wizards return to Summersville Grade School in Mt. Vernon on Saturday, Oct. 12. The game starts at 7 p.m. with doors opening at 6 p.m. Tickets cost $10 in advance or $15 at the door.

It's just kind of like the Harlem Globetrotters,” Heather Swan of the Summersville Parent Teacher Organization said. “It's a fun family event basically for any age. I have 62-year old parents that throughly enjoyed it. They pulled out a 4-year old on the floor last year who was an absolute blast.”

This is the second straight year for the Harlem Wizards to appear at the school, and Swan said the group created excitement with its performance a year ago.

It's a great fundraiser event, but the kids talked about it for months on end,” Swan said. “I've had so many people that didn't get to go last year that were saying, 'I heard how much fun it was. I want to go this year.'”

The game lasts about two hours and players will remain after the action to sign autographs and pose for pictures with members of the crowd.

Swan found out about the Harlem Wizards through a PTO convention held in St. Charles, Mo., during the spring of 2012.

That's kind of how we started with it last year,” Swan said.

A promotional event of the evening will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Summersville. Several athletes will be at the school to offer a sneak peak of what the audiences can expect on Oct. 12.

Individuals interested in purchasing tickets to the game on Oct. 12 can contact Swan at 231-5139. The school is also selling tickets for the event.
