Lady Rams sweep Webber

Aces fuel Mt. Vernon's offense

Mt. Vernon's volleyball team stormed past Webber in its opening match.

Mt. Vernon won the match 25-7, 25-8 and was rarely tested.

I thought we looked pretty good,” Mt. Vernon coach Angie Higgins said. “I thought they did a really good job kind of coming out and playing our game.”

Aces fueled the Lady Rams attack. Rachel Kirsch and Alexis Stewart finished with five aces each. Whitney Jones added four.

We've been working on serving a lot,” Higgins said. “Along with our passing, but I think we had five missed serves all night, which is pretty good for us for two games.”

Mt. Vernon raced to a 12-3 lead to start the opening game. Stewart helped the initial run with three aces.

Higgins said the match was a good start to the season after a long summer of practices for her team.

I think that ups their enthusiasm about the season because we've had a long summer. We've had a long two, two and a half weeks of practice,” Higgins said. “So it was good to kind of get them in the game and being competitive.”

Webber's best moments came near the beginning of the second game. Kaylea Potter recorded an ace after a Mt. Vernon hitting error, and the Lady Trojans closed to within a point at 5-4. Mt. Vernon responded with a run to open up the game. After it was the service game, that aided the Lady Rams. Stewart had a pair of aces. Kirsch followed with a pair as well. The serves led Mt. Vernon to a 15-5 edge.

Stewart finished the game with 13 digs, and Madalina Overstreet added eight. Hannah Owens led the Lady Rams with five kills.

Mt. Vernon is 1-0 this season.
