MT. VERNON —
The Rams golf team is focused on finishing in the top three of today’s sectional at Carbondale.
The top three teams advance to the 2A state finals along with the top 10 individuals not on an advancing team. The Rams traveled down to the course on Thursday for a practice round.
“This weekend I just said, ‘Hey you do what you need to do to get yourself ready to go for Monday,’” Mt. Vernon coach Quinn McClure said. “So we haven’t done anything out of the ordinary to get ready to play this sectional.”
Mt. Vernon is familiar with the Hickory Ridge course after playing there several times in addition to the practice round, but the Rams will face difficult competition. The field of schools includes defending 2A team champs Belleville Althoff. The Rams also face South Seven Conference champ Marion in the group. They’re joined by Massac County and Mt. Carmel.
“You’d just like to survive,” McClure said. “Would winning the thing be nice? Sure it would, but would third place be good? It would be really good because it would mean we would advance.”
Last week Jonathan Stowers led the Rams at the Effingham regional after shooting a 77. Trevor Flota was a stroke behind him with a 78. Matthew Williams and Hayden Poninski both shot a 82.

Woodlawn advanced three individuals who will compete at the Carterville sectional. Gabe Owens (83), Ronnie Brake (89) and Taylor Fauss (90) all qualified. The Cardinals’ golfers are joined by Waltonville’s Dennis Nelson who advanced out of the Anna-Jonesboro regional with a 91.
Waltonville’s Lindsey Reeves and Jerrica Haley are the lone Jefferson County representatives at the Teutopolis sectional. Both players advanced out of the Centralia regional. Reeves led the way with a 97, and Haley shot a 101.
